henkan | 2017 | entrance audit assignment ZHdK

I got the idea for henkan in the Japanese restaurant where I worked. Normally people eat with chopsticks. Only in certain situations, for example when a soup or an Onsen Tamago (soft boiled egg) is served, it is useful to use a spoon. With the idea of combining chopsticks and spoon, I came to my final result.

The developed product is a fusion of Hashioki (Japanese chopstick holder) and a spoon that snaps into place on the edge of the bowl or plate. The design is simple, self-explanatory and integrates well into a setting of traditional Japanese tableware. I have given my product the name henkan, which in Japanese means transformation or mutation. henkan is meant to enrich the culinary experience at home or in a restaurant and create additional value.
